Data on the Move: Universal File MCP
In this episode of Data on the Move, Komprise Co-founder and COO Krishna Subramanian and Darren Cunningham discuss Komprise Universal File MCP.
Komprise Universal File MCP is a single interface for AI agents and LLMs to query across enterprise file storage, NAS, cloud, and unstructured data silos. It right-sizes responses by sending just the right unstructured data, enriched with context and governed by user-specific access permissions.

Universal File MCP FAQs
What is the Komprise Universal File MCP?
Komprise Universal File MCP is a single interface that lets AI agents and LLMs query unstructured data across enterprise file storage, NAS, cloud and other silos. It doesn’t flood the model with raw file listings. It sends only the relevant data, enriched with context and limited by each user’s existing access permissions. Users ask questions in plain language in the AI assistant they already use, such as Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or any other MCP-compatible tool. Where permitted, they can also take action on the results through Deep Analytics, Smart Data Workflows, KAPPA data services and Transparent File Tables.
What problem does Komprise Universal File MCP solve?
It solves MCP bloat and response bloat. Nearly every vendor now publishes an MCP interface, so AI tools are overloaded with tool definitions. That lowers accuracy, slows performance and raises costs. Unstructured data makes it worse: file and object listings are unbounded, often millions to billions of files, so AI processes too much of the wrong data. According to McKinsey’s Enterprise AI FinOps Survey, 60% of agentic AI compute costs go to “response refinement” token loops. Komprise Universal File MCP replaces a separate connector for every storage system with one governed interface. It also uses Deep Analytics to filter out irrelevant, outdated, conflicting and duplicate data before it reaches the model.
How is this different from MCP servers offered by storage vendors?
A storage vendor’s MCP server covers only that vendor’s footprint, and each one adds more tool definitions for AI to sort through. Most enterprises run a mix of NAS, object and cloud storage. Komprise Universal File MCP gives AI one interface to all of it, with a consistent schema from the petabyte-scale Global Metadatabase, wherever the data lives or whoever created it. It uses progressive disclosure: metadata first, then files only when the AI needs them. With Transparent Move Technology, it also serves data that has been tiered or archived and can deliver the right data to a data lakehouse like Snowflake or databricks.
How does Komprise Universal File MCP keep enterprise data secure?
Every request is authenticated as a Komprise user as well as through existing SSO and identity provider integrations, so users see only the data they’re already authorized to see. Komprise audits what data goes to the AI for governance and reporting. Smart Data Workflows can find PII, PHI and other regulated data and users can exclude sensitive results from any query.
Who can use Komprise Universal File MCP, and how do I get access?
Anyone with authorized access to enterprise unstructured data can use it, not just IT and storage specialists. That includes researchers, clinicians, compliance and legal teams, data engineers and business analysts. Komprise Universal File MCP is available today through an early access program. It is included for current customers with a Komprise Intelligent Data Management subscription. To learn more, visit komprise.com/MCP or contact your Komprise sales team.
